Part 1
Art Critique Process
1. Describe (What things do you see? Techniques? Medium? Genre?)
2. Analyze (How are lines, colors, shapes, and textures used in this piece? Is there a focal point? How are things fitting together?)
3. Interpret (What is going on in the piece? What is the piece trying to say?)
4. Decide/Evaluate (Do you like this piece of art? Why or why not? Best and worst qualities of this art? Was the artist successful in displaying their message?)
Piece from beggining of the year that didn't represent me.
Display of my evolution in the evaluation of art critique.
Desribe. The medium that I chose to use on this project is acrilic paint. This was mandatory of the project but I'm glad we did this project considering that I would never really think of using paint but it got me out of my comfort zone and to try something new. The technique that I displayed was obviously painting and also a technique of weaving. Weaving not in the sense of material, but instead in the respect to colors. I displayed this by using different shades and hues of green to display a unique grass texture that showed realism. The genre of the painting in my opinion would be still life simply because I was drawing an inanimate object.
Analyze. The focal point of this painting is the the shoe itself, but the more fine focal point of the art piece is the pink nike swoosh considering that then swoosh is in the middle of the piece. When doing this piece I decided to use a medium color scheme, this way the picture would not appear to bright, but also not too bright. I wanted the texture to be smooth so all aspects of my message were displayed in flowing unison instead of blocky different ideas. Not only was I trying to create a smooth texture but also a realilistic one, so finding the balance between the two formed a difficult medium ground. The cleat itself was hardest to do that considering that it has jagged edges and sharp corners.
Interpret. The artwork itself is rather simple. There is not much going on other than the literal meeting from the artist. There is no deep meaning except that the meaning of this artwork is the get away from struggle for the artist, simply their hobby.
Decide/Evaluate. I do indeed like this piece of art considering I am the one that made it. The only part that I would change would be the detail of the clear. It is subpar right now and with more precise texture and painting it could of been made a great piece of art. The best part about this piece of art is the texture and realism of the sky and grass. It has great mixture and a great medium color choice. I believe the artist acomplished his objective.
Part 2
3 Questions
1. What is art?
In my opinion art is simply a unique way of expressing oneself. Artists display their messages using different mediums, different textures, different colors and so much more. Their creativity is endless and almost just about anything can be considered art. Art can be either simple or complex, and that's what I admire about art. I like how there is no limits, you can do whatever you want to express your feelings or emotions.
3. Is copying always plagiarism or is there a gray area? Explain your thoughts.
In my personal opinion, I believe that there is grey area in the world of copying. If one thinks about it, no thought is actually original thought, everything that is thought of is from a prior thought. Using other artists to inspire yourself is great. I personally love looking at images that are inspired by techniques of great artists such as van goh.
7. What is the point of this class? What did you get out of it?
The point of this class is to learn how to express oneself through art. In this class Ms. Sudkamp taught me how to use inspiration and a handful of different mediums to discover what art really is and how to create it using different techniques. Overall was a very fun semester and learned lots of useful information which I can apply for later in life. Maybe inspired me to take a sculpture or pottery class later on!
